In this not-quite-workshop, not-quite lecture, Jeff Smith, board member and facilitator of last fall’s popular writing-technology workshop, will facilitate a mutual exploration of structure, process and tools. Jeff believes that the software tools available today are woefully neglectful of the writer’s creative process, and with your help, he wants to do something about it (he is pursuing a doctorate in this very thing). He isn’t going to give firm answers, though—he wants this to be a collaborative adventure, an investigation into how writers think, how they organize, and how they interact with the technology, from recipe cards and sticky notes, to wikis and Word draft files, and beyond.

The fall class in poetry (yes, three in a row, but clearly we’re on a roll here) will give enthusiasts a second, or first, chance to enjoy Jennifer Still’s unique and popular approach to finding the poet within. Check out the description of her highly popular winter class, The Obsession Sessions 1,here.
How does a poem come to be? When do jottings, notes, ideas and impulses turn into finely tuned lines, resonant metaphors? When is a poem ever finished?
In The Revision Sessions, participants will explore processes and craft that push a text beyond its initial impulses into poetic meaning. Through various writing and rewriting exercises, discussions and readings, participants will discover and rediscover the language of their obsessions through the revision process, where the real writing begins.
Open to everyone—The Obsession Sessions 1 is not a prerequisite.
Jennifer Still's first book of poetry, Saltations (Thistledown Press, 2005), was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards. She is recipient of the 2008 Saskatchewan Foundation of the Arts Emerging Artist Award and Regional Winner of the 2008 CBC Poetry Face-Off. Jennifer lives in Saskatoon with her husband and children, where she is cofounder of the literary chapbook publisher JackPine Press.
